How to Apply Edible Cake Toppers Like a Pro
Share
Hope you’re having a sweet month! Let’s dive into some cake magic from the SugarBrush kitchen.
Whether you're baking up a storm for Easter Sunday or planning ahead for birthdays and baby showers, our custom icing cake toppers are the perfect finishing touch. But we get it—when they’re this detailed and delicate, applying them can feel like a high-stakes moment.
Don't worry—we've got your back. Here's a step-by-step guide to applying your edible icing cake topper like a pro, without cracks, tears, or melty messes.
Step 1: Wait Until the Cake is Cool
Make sure your cake is fully cooled and any frosting or fondant layer has set. Applying your topper too soon can cause it to melt, wrinkle, or absorb moisture.
Tip: Buttercream is best when slightly crusted over—smooth, but not wet!
Step 2: Remove the Topper Gently
Your SugarBrush topper will arrive wrapped in acid free tissue paper. Carefully unwrap each item when you’re ready to apply.

Step 3: Lightly Moisten the Back
Dab a very light amount of water onto the back/bottom of the topper using a clean brush or sponge. Don't soak it—just enough to help it stick. (some toppers can be placed directly onto your cake!)
Too much water can make the colours bleed or cause the topper to stretch.
Step 4: Position & Press
Gently place the topper where you want it, and press down evenly from the centre outwards.
Step 5: Let it Set
Give your cake a moment to chill—literally! Keep it in a cool, dry spot until you’re ready to display it.
❄️ Avoid storing in the fridge after the topper is applied, as condensation may cause the design to run.
🧁 Extra Tips for a Flawless Finish:
-
For fondant cakes: You can apply toppers directly with a brush of edible glue or water.
-
For buttercream cakes: Let the buttercream firm up slightly before applying.
